All,
It is with great excitement that we announce that the Stony Plain Rec Centre was approved April 22nd, 2024 during the town council meeting. Three of us from the board were in attendance to show support for the vote. After 3 hours of discussion and deliberation, the motion was unanimously passed to move forward with the Recreation Centre which includes the curling rink. This has been almost 3 years in the making.
Our club is partnering with the Town and putting insurance and grant money toward the project. Westridge applied for and received the maximum $1 million for a provincial CFEP grant going towards the project as well.
At the bottom of this email is the press release from the town today and you can click the link of the agenda and go to page 119 to see what was presented to council. This includes rendering and some layout drawing information.
As it looks at the moment, the tender will go out in May and picking a contractor in July with the shovels going in the ground this August. It appears like it will be ready for the 2026/27 season, 2 year build.
The board will take the next 2 years to get ready to open. By creating a business plan and purchasing all the necessary equipment needed.
Thank you for your patience during the process. It has been agonizing and stressful.
We were unsure of the direction since the $21 Million Federal Grant the town applied for was rejected completely. The town was shocked that 0% of the request was given.
Our club sent letters and met with our MP in support. But the town has decided that this project is important enough to move forward without Federal Grant money.
I would like to personally thank the entire board (past and present) for their work during the almost 3 years to keep this alive. Having a town owned facility that we will lease, we can concentrate on running curling instead of managing an aging facility (1958) that served us great for 62 seasons of curling. Being in a new facility guarantees many more decades of curling in our community.
Thank you,
Kevin Hedley, Westridge Curling Club President (and the entire Board of Directors)

Council has prioritized the addition of a new Recreation Centre to the community since 2018. It has taken several years to refine the approved project that includes a 6-sheet curling facility, walking track, multi purpose courts, pickleball courts, community space and a turf field.
The project will be funded through debenture, the Westridge Curling Club, offsite levies, and a contribution from Parkland County.
